This short volume sheds illumination on one of the most neglected campaigns of the Second World War. The defeat of the Italians in East Africa was a major feat of logistics and, as Wavell said, an improvised war in the grand British tradition.

The Italians are often discounted as serious adversaries but they put up some very stout resistance, at Agordat, Amba Alagi, and especially at Keren.

There are many lessons contained within about fighting in empty inhospitable territory, and it is written in a lively and engaging style. It is written primarily from the British perspective, but for anyone wanting to learn more about the Italian contribution to the Second World War this is a must read.
